Our March meeting was a toe tapping good time. Eveline Stout and her 10 dancers demonstrated “Line”Dancing. She gave some lessons then we were able to dance to “Boot Scooting Boogie”. Blue jeans, cowboy boots and hats were worn with pride! Refreshments and our devotions were also an important part of the meeting. If you missed out on this fun, make sure to mark your calendar for the second Tuesday in April for our next meeting.
UCW Spring General Meeting 2025
Our Valentine's party for our February meeting was uplifting. We enjoyed tasty Valentine themed treats followed by a very interesting, intriguing, and awe inspiring presentation by our guest speaker, Sue Prentice. She spoke about "The Art of Loving Kindness". We were left with a reminder to practice loving kindness for ourselves, a person we love, a person we barely know and a person that we find challenging to maintain a relationship with, by daily reciting:
"May I (They) Be Well"
"May I (They) Live In Peace"
"May I (They) Feel Love"
We concluded the afternoon with devotions. The men were invited to join us for this special Valentine party.
Our January 14th meeting was very enjoyable. Our guest speaker, Melissa Hope had us tapping our toes, shaking some noise makers and engaging in music. Melissa grew up at Mark Street United Church. She has her Bachelor of Music Therapy and Psychology and a Counselling Degree from Wilfred Laurier University. She uses music daily - working with medically fragile children of all disabilities and people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Recently Melissa has partnered with Hospice Peterborough to provide music at bedside and end-of-life support. Melissa is an accredited Suzuki Piano Teacher, has her Grade 9 Royal Conservatory Certificate in piano and Grade 8 in French horn. It was a wonderful afternoon of fellowship and very uplifting.
In November the UCW had Hon. Lieutenant Lee-Anne Quinn speak to us about her work, in the Military, and now since retiring. She told us about her work and passion to keep the Brock Primary Care Clinic open to provide medical care for those who are marginalized in our community.
We were pleased to give a donation of $1,000.00 to help assist with the Brock Primary Care Clinic.
UCW CHRISTMAS PARTY (including men!)
This year’s Christmas Potluck Luncheon was a big hit. There were many delicious foods to sample and enjoy. The icy sidewalks, roads and foggy weather kept attendance lower than usual, but everyone had a wonderful time. After lunch, our organist Faye McMillan led us in a Christmas sing-song and Rev. Alan Boyd gave us an inspiring Christmas Message about “A Boy’s Dream of Trains at Christmas Time.” As part of our Outreach Program this year, we collected items for the Kawartha Haliburton Children’s Aid Society.
Our UCW Christmas Muffin Party was a HUGE SUCCESS! Thank you to those who attended, those who donated, those who worked!
A message from Jewell, UCW President. A huge “Thank You” to everyone who helped to make the Muffin Party such a wonderful time with remarkable results. It takes a full team of everyone working together. A team that included- men setting up tables and chairs- dishwashers- servers- salespeople at the tables- creative people at the workshops- friendly people at the door and selling tickets- bakers for the bake table and muffin making. It was nice to see so many people having a lovely time chatting, enjoying their coffee and muffins and expressing how much they enjoy Mark Street hospitality! This year’s proceeds are a Grand Total of $5,852.20.
*** UPDATE***
In November the UCW had Hon. Lieutenant Lee-Anne Quinn speak to us about her work in the Military and now since retiring, she told us about her work and passion to keep the Brock Primary Care Clinic open to provide medical care for those who are marginalized in our Community.
We were pleased to give a donation of $1,000.00 to help assist with the Brock Primary Care Clinic.
On Tuesday November 12th, Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel/Major Retired Lee-Ann Quinn, spoke to the ladies of the UCW about her experience serving overseas. Lee-Ann spent 22 years as an air evacuation nurse in the Canadian Armed Forces. During her active career she served in 5 warzones and provided medical care to underserved communities in Northern Ontario.
During her presentation, Lee-Ann spoke candidly about the dangerous situations people face in warzones and the awful living conditions they must endure, squalid living conditions that exist even in our own province. She shared pictures and stories of the care medical teams provided to soldiers, civilians and the enemy. As a nurse practitioner in Northern Ontario, Lee-Ann treated substance abuse, mental health conditions, cancer and gruesome logging injuries acting as much as a doctor as a nurse practitioner.
At the end of her presentation, she explained that doing this presentation would likely set her up for three nights of nightmares as sharing the stories causes her to relive the experiences, but she needed to share the stories because they are too heavy to carry alone. So, by sharing the stories with everyone gathered the load would be lighter for her.
Lee-Ann now serves as the first Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel in the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. Her work with veteran organizations is extensive. She is also very involved in the care of homeless people.
The ladies of the UCW were moved by hearing Lee-Ann’s stories and gained a deeper appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices of those who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. As Maxine Prentice shared while thanking Lee-Ann, hearing these stories makes the words "Lest We Forget" even more important for us.
Thank you, Lee-Ann, for sharing your experiences and memories with us.

Our guest speaker, Sue Prentice, was so informative on the topic of "Self Compassion" and the importance and implications of ensuring that we practice self compassion. Our Annual UCW Picnic was a huge success! Although the weather started out cold, it warmed up nicely for our bbq. The food was fantastic as usual. The conversation was interesting and engaging. The entertainment by the Bennett Trio was toe taping, get up and dance, join-in-singing, delightful! A HUGE thank you to the Trio, and to our President Jewell for hosting! On Tuesday, May 14th we had a wonderful lunch of fancy sandwiches, squares and tarts. The tea and coffee were served in china cups & saucers from silver tea service. Our Guest Speaker, our very own Karin DesChamp, used a powerpoint presentation to tell us about how two Mothers who were complete strangers and from different countries, different cultures and different languages demonstrated the strength, faith, courage, pain, despair and love of Mothers. Everyone throughly enjoyed this special Mother's themed meeting. Check out the pictures to see the Hats, Fascinators, and smiles! Several people brought pictures of their mother and shared why they were special. We all had a picture taken with our Honourary Mother, Lou Hatherly, our oldest member at 100 years of age.
A “Big Thank You” to everyone who supported the Time & Talent Sale after Church last Sunday. We are pleased to report we made $1,061.65! Your generosity was very appreciated by the UCW.
Our March UCW meeting with a
ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY theme was lots of fun for everyone including the children who attended! The band “Kitchen Party” entertained us with toe tapping Irish Music. Several people dressed in green. The food also had a green theme.
Our UCW Meeting was held on Tuesday, February 13th. A Valentine theme was in effect. We were entertained by Highland Dancer Olivia Marshall. She has won over 100 awards in the past 12 years with her dancing. Olivia explained each dance and gave us a little history. Everyone enjoyed the Valentine Treats, UCW Hospitality, the devotions and the entertainment.
A large crowd gathered in Friendship Hall on Tuesday, December 12th for a delicious pot luck dinner. Rev. Richard Boehme gave us a beautiful message about his Christmas memories from childhood into his Ministry. Faye McMillan led us in a lively carol sing.
We gathered 5 bags of new clothing for the YES Shelter.
We made a motion to top up our giving to the General Fund to $10,000.00 for 2023. This was made possible from our Rummage Sale, Muffin Party and catering.
Look at the pictures below to glimpse the outstanding work by our UCW, who demonstrated teamwork to create a festive Christmas Muffin Party fundraising event. Outdoor arrangements, scrumptious home baking, delicious homemade preserves, "new to you" and a fabulous Christmas themed table helped our guests to begin their Christmas shopping. The delicious muffins, jams, and bottomless cups of coffee and tea helped to stir the Christmas Spirit. All funds raised support the church and various charitable projects. Several ladies participated in our Christmas Outdoor Arrangements Workshop. Plenty of fun and fellowship was enjoyed as we worked together to create these beautiful arrangements. The above is just a few pictures of the work being done in preparation for our Christmas Muffin Party on Saturday, November 25th.
Our UCW Meeting on Tuesday, November 14th provided us with inspiring information about the mental health benefits of "Forest Bathing". Our guest speaker was Kristie Virgos - who is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of our land.
We also had a Service of Remembrance as we remembered the Men and Women who served their country during War Time.
Our Christmas Muffin Party will be held on Saturday, November 25th from 9am - 12noon.
Our next meeting will be our Christmas Potluck lunch on Tuesday, December 12th at 12:00noon. All ladies are invited to join us for this festive event.
Our October meeting was a joyful, socializing event. Delicious apple crisp along with tea and coffee started our meeting on a thankful note. Our guest speaker, Billi from the Salvation Army filled us in on the various Outreach programs that are run by the Salvation Army. From foodbanks, to breakfast programs, to Christmas hampers to financial planning. These are just some of the amazing programs offered and supported by many here in Peterborough. Our thanks to Billi for her excellent and informative presentation. Our President, Jewell, presented Billi with a donation from our UCW for the Salvation Army. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 1:15pm.
Fun at the Rummage Sale!
On the morning of Saturday September 30th, the church opened its doors to visitors coming to the UCW Rummage Sale. It was wonderful to see all the people coming through and just as wonderful to see the generosity of so many people who donated items in the days before. Even after the event which was well attended, “with all the items that were left,” UCW President Jewell explained, “we easily could have had a hundred more people!”
On Friday, Friendship Hall was set up with tables and clothing racks. As volunteers started arriving, the massive pile of clothing donations that at first seemed overwhelming quickly disappeared. Then volunteers moved to the CEC where item after item was brought down from the stage. Just when it seemed like the last item had been brought out something else arrived. Still, with so many working together everything was set out in good time.
The day of the rummage sale turned out to be the same day as the East City Community-Wide Yard Sale. When Lynn and Tim noticed that things seemed to be slowing down inside the church, they made up some signs and went out to the street. They were able to direct a good number of people into the church. “The best part about the sale,” said Lynn, “was that we brought people in the community together. It was great interacting with folks and it felt good to show them that this is an active church.” Lynn has already started thinking about what we’ve learned from this year’s sale and how we can use that for all upcoming events. Don’t be surprised if at the next event you see volunteers outside the church inviting folks in!
“I will forever be grateful for all the people who came out to help sell items and clean up.” Jewell shared. At the end of the sale the UCW had made $1347.00. Thank you everyone for your support of this event!
Our September meeting was very enjoyable. We enjoyed conversation, tea, coffee, delicious treats, our guest speaker and devotions.
Diane Chappell showied us her antique doll collection as well as a number of other dolls. She shared information about dolls and why she enjoys her collecting hobby. We thoroughly enjoyed her historical fiction story about two of her dolls.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 10th at 1:15pm.
We will be holding a "New to You" Sale on Saturday, September 30th from 9:00am until 12:00pm.
We enjoyed having a summer break, but it is now time to get back to our regular fun activities! One thing we all enjoy is our UCW meetings. Our UCW is an open group. All women are welcome to join! We hold monthly meetings on the second Tuesday at 1:15pm. We enjoy conversation, tea, coffee, delicious treats, a guest speaker on very informative topics, and devotions.
Tuesday, September 12th's guest speaker is Diane Chappell who will be showing us her antique doll collection as well as a number of other dolls. She regularly attends Doll Shows, selling and showing the public her dolls. She is an International Director for a worldwide organization whose goal is the preservation and education of dolls.
We will be holding a "New to You" Sale on Saturday, September 30th from 9:00am until 12:00pm.
Our UCW BBQ and POOL Party was held at Jewell’s home. Twenty-nine Members attended as well as 5 Guests. It was a beautiful day, but not hot enough for swimmers. We dined on BBQ hot dogs and a lovely variety of salads and desserts. The Bennett Trio and Ben and Rachael H. entertained us with gospel and country songs. We will meet again in September.
During our May meeting we celebrated mothers and our dear member Judy who is moving out of Peterborough. We look forward to her return visits.
We enjoyed our Guest Speaker Cecilia Simmons - a retired Funeral Celebrant with Highland Park and Little Lake Cemeteries. Her topic was “The Value of Family Leading into Mother’s Day.”
We enjoyed our refreshments of crackers, cheese, fresh fruit and a celebration cake. Our devotions focused on Mothers.
We collected lots of hairbrushes and combs for the YES shelter.
Some tasty treats from a recent catering.
This is a photo of Angelica Ottaweil who was a guest at the April 11th UCW Meeting. Angelica was one of four poets from the Independent Poets and Writers Group in Lakefield, who ably presented their poems beautifully. Here Angelica brings a poem to life through the use of her classically trained voice and her harp to which we could have listened to all afternoon. We began our meeting by enjoying delicious fancy sandwiches, fresh fruit kabobs and sweet treats along with tea or coffee. Our devotions reminded us the importance of caring for the environment that God gave us. Our next meeting will be held on May 9th with a focus on Mothers.
Our St. Patrick's Party on Tuesday, March 14th, was a HUGE success. Everyone had fun listening and dancing to the fabulous "Toe Tapping" Irish music of the Donegal Fiddlers! The goodies were also delicious! At our meeting, we gave out a Toonie to each Member. We will use our talent and use our head to make our money grow a bit, double it or more. On Palm Sunday, April 2nd, we'll have a "TIME AND TALENT TABLE" at the Coffee hour to sell our goods and see how much our funds will grow. Whatever you can do, you can be sure we'll thank you, yes indeed! You'll help us raise some money that we do surely need. We'll use our talents, given by God, in some creative ways and give thanks for all our gifts as we praise God every day!
***Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 11th. Come and join us!

Our February meeting was on the 14th, Valentine's Day! We celebrated with tasty treats and focussed on self love, body care and energy healing. Our guest speaker was Craig Niziolek (our Custodian) who demonstrated Therapeutic Touch. It was very interesting and provided us with an alternative healing practice. We also collected several bags of toiletries and some sweet Valentine treats for the YES shelter.
The power went out in East City just before our meeting was to begin. Fortunately, the coffee was brewed, so those who enjoy coffee were able to enjoy a hot drink. Our guest speaker in January was Brooke Erickson from The Yes Shelter. She was a good Speaker - very informative and now we know a lot more about that cause. We gave them a donation and decided to collect toiletries in the next few months. She told us about how much they need these kinds of Items.
Our UCW will be having our Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 13th with a Potluck Lunch at 12:00 noon. We will be entertained with some special Christmas Music. Please join us for this fun event. This will definitely get you in the Christmas spirit!! All ladies welcome.
The UCW would like to sincerely thank all those who helped at our Muffin Party on Saturday, November 19th!. Your donations of muffins, baked goods, preserves and items for the Christmas Table and New -to-You Table were so appreciated! The support from people who attended and shopped made it a successful sale. We couldn’t hold these events without the “Man Power” for setting up tables and taking them down and helping clean up. To Rick and Greg - thank you so much for working in the kitchen washing dishes!! It takes everyone working together and all of you made a great team! We are pleased to announce a profit of $3874.70

Our UCW meeting on Tuesday, September 13th was a lovely afternoon beginning with tea, coffee, and tasty treats. We also enjoyed sharing President Jewell's birthday cake! It was great getting to know our new Minister, Rev. Ned Wells. We discovered that he has awesome credentials, a fabulous storied past, and he also has a wonderful sense of humour. He brought some scripture verses to life by helping us to see their relevance in our lives today.
Our next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 11th.
Our UCW picnic which was held at our President's home was a huge success! Everyone enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, sunny day, gentle breeze, fabulous salads, bbq hot dogs, desserts, and the Bennett Family Singers!! We hated to have the afternoon come to an end! Our Grandmother's Tea was a huge success! What fun we had sharing memories of our grandmothers and activities that we did with them. Karin shared her book, "Something To Remember Me By" which was a great inspiration for the shared stories. We also had fun sharing pictures, wearing hats or aprons. The tea and goodies were delicious and our devotions really had us thinking about how God puts people in our lives that influence us.
Don't miss out on our picnic on June 14th at noon, which will be held at the home of our President Jewell.
